Presentation Abstract
Colonialism has effected a wide
array of impact and influences on Southeast Asian life and society. This impact
ranges from division and deconstruction to reconfiguration and transformation.
Colonialism however is not only characterized by changes but by continuities as
well due to some aspects, ideas and practices that have remained constant. To
better comprehend Southeast Asians’ response to colonialism, a glimpse of the
socioeconomic and political status of Southeast Asians upon the arrival of the
Western colonialists or during the early Western colonial period is necessary.
